CHALLENGE 3
Alpha Day 3: 2 November 2006

For this challenge, I am asking you write a passage of prose for reading aloud - but in that passage, you must use the surnames of authors. The names must be used in a way other than as a surname, and you can use a certain freedom in pronunciation. As an example, last year I wrote a story for a village social evening in which I used over 40 surnames: the idea was that the audience could shout and wave their hands about when a village surname was read. I have attached this as an example of what I mean.

Use at least 10 surnames of well-known authors in your passage (usual maximum limit 300 words), with at least 8 coming from the list below (if you use others, they must be well-known). The aim is to get the best passage, but there could also be a bonus point for the one who uses the maximum number of author's names in a cohesive passage. The names should be written as the author spelt them, but they can be used in any way in pronunciation. There could be a bonus point for a brilliant idea - like using du Maurier!

The List:

Dickens, Rowling, Blackmore, Francis, Greene, Dunmore, Forsyte, Hemingway, Chandler, Shaw, Wheatley, Orwell, Sayers, Priestley, Churchill, Allcott, Archer, Austen, Kipling, Shute, Wilde, Lively, Hardy, Swift, Sitwell, Frost, Christie, Carroll.
