Winning entry by David:
October 29th 1986
Come praise October twenty-nine
birth of that road so serpentine.
Two hundred thousand drivers say
“Swipe me! Is this the only way?”
Each day they dream of Shangri-la
and trav’lling swiftly – not by car!
Through Surrey, Herts and Beds and Bucks
those endless cars and vans and trucks
will rumble ‘til there’s no more fuel
and we go back to bike and mule…
Then all will weep ‘cause they can’t drive
that serpentine M 25

Runners up: Claire, Rosemary and Sally
Claire's entry:
Memories
Ten years ago we said goodbye,
agreed t`was best for all concerned.
Yet not a day goes by, my love
that you`re not held within my thoughts.
I`ve kept our pact, stayed out of reach,
but cannot cast you from my heart.
My life was blessed by time with you;
your warmth, your laughter and your love.
Life does go on, we said it would,
just differently from how we`d planned.
But ten years on, I miss you still
and wonder if I`m in your thoughts.
Rosemary's entry:
St George’s Day
I’m proud to be an Englishman
And known for my reserve,
My courage and my bravery,
My willingness to serve.
I fly my flag with pride across
This undulating land,
The fields of green, the countryside,
Where oak and willow stand.
My cities proud for justice rise,
For freedom blood was shed.
I’m proud to be an Englishman
And wear my cross of red.
Sally's entry:
A poem to my husband on the occasion of our 10th wedding anniversary
As we pass our first decade, let’s think about those vows we made…
Children… better; housework… worse;
(have you seen where I put my purse?)
Richer? Yeah, right - more like poorer,
thanks to kids and car insurer
Sickness? Where’s the Nurofen?
I can’t be ill till half-past ten!
I’ll still honour and obey, so long as I can get my way….
And love? Oh yes, there’s lots of that -
without it this would all fall flat.
But don’t you think, as on we lurch
…they didn’t tell us this in church!
